Hand-printed in a limited edition at Edinburgh Printmakers, KYC has been created especially for Kettle’s Yard by internationally acclaimed artist Callum Innes.
Born in Edinburgh in 1962, Innes studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and Edinburgh College of Art. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious NatWest Prize for Painting in 1998 and the Jerwood Prize for Painting in 2002. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and can be found in collections including the Guggenheim New York, the National Gallery of Austria, Tate London and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. A selection of Innes’ watercolours were shown at Kettle’s Yard in 2018 as part of Actions. The image of the world can be different.
Since 2014, Innes has been exploring the qualities and possibilities of stone lithography, evolving a method that offers him the most immediacy and fluidity in his image making, as well as allowing him to produce prints in layers of colour. For this print, Innes used watercolour paintings as a starting point, painting directly onto the surface of several lithographic stones with ink wash, then painting with acid-gum etches to lighten or remove areas. The print was then realised through a period of trial proofing, reworking and playful overprinting to arrive at the finished work.
