Peter Coffin’s mock-poster advertises an imaginary music concert in Cambridge. It features a line-up of artists and bands, all of whom have a connection with the city. Coffin replicates the iconic design of the ‘show print’ posters made by a Los Angeles print shop, Colby Poster Printing Co. The artist uses an old-fashioned printing technique, first applying the tri-tone “rainbow-roll” background colours onto the paper, before printing the text with black letterpress ink.

The familiar-yet-fictional “poster” references the global revival of live-music performances in the last couple of decades. The heightened colours reflect the spirit of optimism and unity at these mass gatherings, especially poignant in an age of political fracture. The artist also points to Cambridge’s vibrant arts scene and situates himself, currently living in the city, within a lineage of cultural practitioners.

With thanks to Kip Gresham at the The Print Studio, Cambridge for hand-printing this limited-edition work.

About the artist

Peter Coffin is a conceptual artist living and working in New York. His works range from prints to large-scale installations, but are unified by their playful and irreverent tone. Referencing both historic and contemporary art, Coffin’s works challenge our pre-conceptions about cultural ideals and immerse the viewer in surreal and subversive environments.

Coffin has held solo exhibitions at the Barbican in London, the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. He has participated in biennials in Berlin, Belgrade, Liverpool, Moscow, Trentino and Yokohama and his works are in the permanent collections of major museums such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
