Dear Barbara is inspired by a letter from Barbara Hepworth to Jim Ede, which James discovered in the Kettle’s Yard archive. In the letter Hepworth apologies profusely for reacting negatively to a request from Jim Ede (the creator of Kettle’s Yard) that she might give one of her sculptures so it could be displayed in the Kettle’s Yard House. Written in 1972, it movingly reveals Hepworth’s close friendship with Jim and Helen Ede since the early 1930s.

James created her print in a single three-hour sitting, using four cartridges of ink. (A time-lapse video of this process is available on the Kettle’s Yard website.) Preserving only the letterhead and a few selected quotes, James covered the letter with her own apologies to family, friends and acquaintances. It begins with an apology to Hepworth for reading the sculptor’s private correspondence. The print’s monochrome palette echoes the base of Group of Three Magical Stones and the colour of Three Personages – two sculptures by Hepworth which are on display in the House.

This print accompanies a series of works which Ann-Marie James has produced for Helen Ede’s bedroom during a residency at Kettle’s Yard in 2019.
